Workers’ Rights Campaign Kickoff – March 2nd, 2013
Over 700 activists turned out for Labour Council’s March 2nd campaign kick-off to defend workers rights. They heard from Labour Council President John Cartwright, CLC President Ken Georgetti and Sarah Jayne King of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario who outlined the present threat to both labour and student movements. Preethy Sivakumar gave a detailed analysis of how Tory leader Tim Hudak’s program promises to weaken unions and divide workers.
The passage of devastating anti-worker legislation in Michigan in just seven days has shocked the labour movement on both sides of the border. But a video message from Maria Elena Durazo of Los Angeles told of how to achieve victory – massive mobilization that defeated a similar Republican offensive in California.
Intense discussion in small group workshops helped prepare activists to go back into to the workplace and engage union members. But it wasn’t all about future tasks. ACTRA members David Sparrow and Richard Young gave a wonderful performance that educated as well as amused the audience. Singer Tabby Johnson brought the crowd to its feet with a stellar performance. And Labour Council Vice-President Andria Babbington brought everyone to their feet again to pledge themselves to take on this vital fight.
Labour Council would like to thank all of the facilitators and discussion leaders who trained for the day’s effort; Tyler Downey of SEIU and Maureen O’Reilly of CUPE Library Workers who inspired with their words; Rob Fairley who planned the day and created the material that will be used in hundreds of workplace discussions in the coming weeks; and the Council staff who made it all possible.
Everyone who attended is invited to come back to the Labour Council on Thursday April 4th to report on their workplace dialogue, and help build the next stage of this important campaign. [/expand]
